Retroflex fricatives in Slavic languages

چکیده

The present study explores the phonetic and phonological grounds on which postalveolar fricatives in Polish can be analysed as retroflex, and considers whether postalveolar fricatives in other Slavic languages are retroflex as well. Velarization and incompatibility with front vowels are introduced as articulatory criteria for retroflexion, based on cross-linguistic data. According to these criteria, Polish and Russian have retroflex fricatives (i.e., /ß/ and /Ω/), whereas Bulgarian has a laminal palatoalveolar fricative (/S/). In addition, it is illustrated that palatalization of retroflex fricatives in Slavic languages (and in general) causes a phonetic and phonological change to a non-retroflex fricative.

Why Is Slavic <č> Not Always /tƒS/?

The Slavic affricate represented by <č> is tacitly or explicitly assumed to be // for all Slavic languages. In this paper I revise the affricate inventories of Polish and Czech, showing that the symbol <č> stands for two different sounds: the postalveolar // in Czech and the retroflex // in Polish. This conclusion is supported by the results of an acoustic study of Polish and Czech aff...

Fricative rhotics in Nusu

Among the world’s languages fricatives are the rarest types of rhotics. They are found in a few African and European languages [13] and as allophones in some Romance languages [4, 8, 9, 12, 17]. Data from Nusu demonstrate the presence of rhotic alveolar fricatives in Asia. Even though they have sometimes been transcribed as retroflex sibilants in earlier studies [11, 20], phonotactic patterns s...

Attentional weighting of Polish and Taiwanese Mandarin sibilant perception

Polish and Taiwanese Mandarin are two languages well known for the three-way distinction of sibilant fricatives (Ladefoged and Maddieson 1996): apical dental [s], laminal1 flat post-alveolar (retroflex) [ù], and laminal palatalized postalveolar (alveolo-palatal) [C]. Although these two languages are historically unrelated, their sibilants share a lot of auditory similarities (Ladefoged and Madd...
